Prysmian maakt duurzaamheid van glasvezelkabelconcept inzichtelijk
Prysmian gaat de milieu-impact van haar Ecoslim kabelconcept inzichtelijk maken. De pilot is een belangrijke volgende stap in de verduurzaming van glasvezelnetwerken.

Een glasvezelnetwerk duurzaam realiseren is pas goed mogelijk als duidelijk is welke milieu-effecten de te gebruiken materialen en componenten hebben. Echter, er is geen standaard voor het classificeren van glasvezelmaterialen op duurzaamheid. Door het ontbreken van gestandaardiseerde rekenregels of Product Category Rules (PCR’s) zijn glasvezelmaterialen en -componenten nog moeilijk te vergelijken. NLconnect wil deze impasse doorbreken door sectorbrede rekenregels voor ons land op te stellen. Prysmian Group, lid van de branche-organisatie voor de glasvezel- en breedbandindustrie, ondersteunt het initiatief met een eigen pilot.
Innovatief kabelconcept
De pilot richt zich op een innovatief kabelconcept door glasvezelnetwerken: Ecoslim. Dit kabelconcept van Prysmian Group omvat zowel nieuwe glasvezelkabels (Sirocco HD) als buizen (Easenet) met een kleinere diameter dan conventionele bekabeling. Hiermee halveert Prysmian het totale volume aan gebruikte plastics (PE) met behoud van functionaliteit!
Van PCR naar EPD
Zodra adviesbureau NIBE, namens NLconnect, de PCR’s voor passieve en actieve glasvezelmaterialen en -componenten heeft opgesteld, kunnen de leden pilots starten. De pilot van Prysmian Group, die loopt van april tot september 2023, omvat het aanleveren van alle benodigde milieudata over Ecoslim bij NIBE. Vervolgens kan het adviesbureau hiermee een Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) uitvoeren en een milieuproductverklaring of Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) afgeven.
Glasvezelsector volgt
EPD’s zijn gestandaardiseerde documenten waarmee aannemers de duurzaamheid van hun werk kunnen aantonen en/of de milieu-impact ervan kunnen verlagen. In de bouwsector worden EPD’s al veel gebruikt en de Nationale Milieudatabase bevat er vele. De objectieve documenten maken het vergelijken en kiezen van materialen eenvoudiger en stimuleren de verduurzaming van gebouwen.
NLconnect wil dat ook in de glasvezelsector bereiken. De werkgroep PCR’s, waar Prysmian Group onderdeel van uit maakt, zal bruikbare elementen van de PCR’s van Frankrijk, Noorwegen en Zweden in de PCR’s voor Nederland verwerken. Naar verwachting zal de werkgroep de pilots eind 2023 evalueren. Daarmee wordt een belangrijke stap in de verdere verduurzaming van de digitale infrastructuur gezet.

Prysmian is going to provide insight into the environmental impact of its Ecoslim cable concept. The pilot is an important next step in making fiber optic networks more sustainable.
Creating a sustainable fiber optic network is only possible when the environmental impact of the materials and components used is clear. However, there is no standard for classifying fiberglass materials for sustainability. Due to the lack of standardized calculation rules or Product Category Rules (PCRs), fiber optic materials and components are still difficult to categoriz. NLconnect wants to break this deadlock by establishing sector-wide calculation rules for the Netherlands. Prysmian Group, a member of the Dutch trade association for the fiber and broadband industry, supports the initiative with its own pilot.
Innovative cable concept
The pilot focuses on an innovative cable concept through fiber optic networks: Ecoslim. This cable concept from Prysmian Group includes both new fiber optic cables (Sirocco HD) and tubes (Easenet) with a smaller diameter than conventional cabling. With this development, Prysmian halves the total volume of plastics (PE) used while maintaining functionality!
From PCR to SPD
Once consulting firm NIBE, on behalf of NLconnect, prepares the PCRs for passive and active fiberglass materials and components, members can start pilots. Prysmian Group's pilot, which runs from April to September 2023, involves supplying NIBE with all the necessary environmental data on Ecoslim. The consulting firm can then use this to perform a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and issue an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
Fiberglass sector follows
EPDs are standardized documents that allow contractors to demonstrate the sustainability of their work and/or the efforts to reduce its environmental impact. EPDs are already widely used in the construction industry, and in The Netherlands the Nationale Milieu Database (National Environmental Database) contains many of such documents. The objective of these documents is to make comparing and choosing materials easier and to encourage the sustainability construction of buildings.
NLconnect wants to achieve the same in the fiber optic sector. The PCRs working group, which includes Prysmian Group, will incorporate useful elements of the PCRs of France, Norway and Sweden into the PCRs for the Netherlands. The working group is expected to evaluate the pilots by the end of 2023. This will mark an important step in increasing the sustainability of digital infrastructure.
