Draka Helps Greek Missionary Organization Switch to Sustainable Solar Energy

Thanks to a special collaboration between Visser Elektrotechniek, the Hoornbeeck College, Stichting Christian Refugee Relief (CRR), Technische Unie and Draka, the Greek mission accommodation Porto Astro has completely switched to solar energy. Porto Astro, a location of the Greek organization Hellenic Ministries, offers refugee camps and training for pastors from Arab countries.

From Diesel to Sustainability

Until recently, the property relied entirely on diesel generators to generate electricity, which was not only costly, but also unsustainable. This changed this year, when a team of teachers, students and installers travelled to Porto Astro to modernise the infrastructure. Together with students from Hoornbeeck College, Visser Elektrotechniek laid about 900 meters of cables, replaced and repaired distribution boxes, and installed about 60 solar panels with a corresponding battery pack. As a result, the accommodation now runs entirely on solar power, which results in a saving of about 150 euros per week in diesel costs.

A joint success

The collaboration between the various partners is experienced as very valuable by everyone, also as an example for the students. Geert van Dijk of Visser Elektrotechniek, one of the initiators of this project, looks back with satisfaction: "This project was a great challenge, but also a wonderful experience for us and the students of Hoornbeeck College. We look back on a great result, which would not have been possible without the contribution of our suppliers, including Draka."

Draka's contribution

"We are proud that Draka has been able to contribute to this meaningful project," adds Esther Ligthart, regional manager at Draka. "It was inspiring to see how all parties worked together to achieve a sustainable solution. This collaboration has not only led to a better energy supply for Porto Astro, but also to valuable learning experiences for the students and those involved. This project shows what we can achieve when we join forces."
