Together for a Clean Schie: Canal Clean-up in Delft
On Tuesday, September 23, 14 Prysmian colleagues took to the water in two boats for a Canal Clean-up in Delft. From our headquarters on the Schie, we wanted to give something back to our immediate surroundings—and we succeeded. In just a few hours, we collected several kilograms of waste from the canals.
This initiative was not only a great team-building activity, but also a concrete contribution to a cleaner city and a healthier living environment. Polluted urban waterways, such as the Schie, have a major impact on people, animals, and the environment.
Why clean canals are important
Pollution in urban waters—such as plastic packaging, cigarette butts, and other litter—eventually flows into the sea via rivers. In Amsterdam alone, an estimated 1.9 million pieces of plastic end up in the IJ river every year, much of which reaches the North Sea. This waste contains microplastics and toxic substances that are harmful to fish, birds, and ultimately humans.
In addition, clean canals are important for:
- Biodiversity: Waterways provide habitats and connecting routes for animals such as fish, birds, and insects.
- Climate adaptation: Canals help to collect rainwater and prevent flooding.
- Quality of life: A clean canal contributes to a pleasant and healthy living and working environment.
Together we make a difference
The Canal Clean-up in Delft shows how we as colleagues can make a positive impact on our immediate environment. Initiatives like this are in line with our broader commitment to sustainability.
At Prysmian, sustainability is central—not only in our actions, but also in our products. Our cable solutions contribute globally to the energy transition, the development of renewable energy, and making infrastructures more sustainable.
