Prysmian and Madaster Collaborate to Advance Circular Construction and Combat Carbon Emissions

Delft, March 2025 – Prysmian, a global leader in cable systems, has partnered with Madaster, the digital platform for materials and products, to introduce the Digital Product Passport (DPP). The collaboration focuses on reducing the environmental impact of building products by providing detailed lifecycle data for better decision-making. According to a UN report, the construction sector is responsible for at least 37% of global carbon emissions, with 25% of these emissions stemming from the production of building materials. Through their partnership, Madaster and Prysmian aim to help the industry measure and manage its carbon footprint, while supporting circularity in construction.

From Identity to Sustainability 

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a record of key data on construction products, including composition, environmental impacts, and end-of-life scenarios. It supports a circular approach to building product management by providing transparency across the value chain, from production to disposal.  

Madaster’s platform, in collaboration with Prysmian, now features a unique QR code, enabling Prysmian's stakeholders to instantly access detailed product information stored within the Madaster platform. This bespoke solution empowers asset owners to track and trace installed products throughout their lifecycle, supporting refurbishment, buyback initiatives, and product-as-a-service models. With Prysmian’s data readily available, building owners can accurately assess their cable inventory and plan for future reuse or recycling efforts. 

 

Regulatory Alignment and Market Demand 

The transition to circular construction is driven by both market demand and regulatory requirements. In 2026, the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will mandate that products in the market have a digital identity, which will be essential for tracking sustainability and circularity.  

Madaster’s Digital Product Passport helps companies navigate upcoming regulations by structuring essential product data into accessible reports. This data enables all stakeholders to assess a product’s environmental performance, ensuring alignment with emerging legal requirements while enhancing transparency and efficiency. 

In the Netherlands, compliance is shifting from traditional MPG (MilieuPrestatie Gebouwen) calculations towards more product-based CO₂ assessments, such as the Paris Proof Indicator. This transition underscores the growing importance of precise product-level carbon data, reinforcing the need for manufacturers to adopt Digital Product Passports to justify and enhance the sustainability credentials of their products. 

 

Supporting Circularity in Construction 

As the construction industry moves toward more sustainable practices, certification schemes like BREEAM are driving demand for low-carbon and circular solutions. The DPP facilitates this transition by equipping stakeholders with a tool to assess product sustainability, optimize resource use, and support circular business models.
