Eco Cable

WHAT IS IT?

The first environmental label dedicated to cables

ECO CABLE is the latest environmental initiative by Prysmian Group, which provides transparent assessment and documentation for a number of our most environmentally friendly cables

Sustainable business practices are becoming increasingly important and there are many different ways to achieve a significant environmental impact. That is why we are introducing ECO CABLE to support our customers in their environmental journey.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Transparent environmental documentation

E Path is Prysmian's global concept for products and solutions with a lower environmental impact. We strive to create added value for our customers.

E Path is our pledge to provide transparent and clear indications and information, using recognised criteria, on the sustainability of our cables and solutions based on our three key drivers: SUSTAINABILITY, RELIABILITY and QUALITY. It is our commitment to the planet.

E Path documentation is freely available, so you always have access to it and can easily use it when necessary. This makes E Path a useful and flexible tool in situations where transparency and documentation are important.

E Path is evolution of ECO CABLE, the first green label in the cable industry, and it is a concept related to a low-impact portfolio that:

  • keeps the same fundamentals, 6 CRITERIAS.
  • INCLUDES SERVICES in addition to cables.
  • is CERTIFIED by a trusted body*.
  • is FULLY COMPLIANT with new European legislation on green claims.
  • is CROSS-MARKET and global.

* Bureau Veritas has verified that activities related to E Path are carried out in compliance with the Prysmian protocol; furthermore, the bureau audited the production process of E Path labelled cables in the Emmen factory.

E Path is not a new product. E Path is a label assigned to existing cable products, solutions and services by ways of an assessment and identifies easily and univoquely the «green products» within the range based on six criteria inspired by the EU Eco label.

Established eco-label certifications (EU Eco-label; EPD – Environmental Product Declaration) are used on a voluntary basis or upon customer request and are very expensive.

EU Eco-label criteria are becoming the reference for guidance on eco-friendly best practices throughout the supply chain (“common language”). None of the existing certified or proprietary eco-labels are specific for the cable industry.

Prysmian is the first cable manufacturer that has developed a proprietary eco-labelling system (former ECO CABLE, now - E Path) based on EU-ecolabel criteria.

The classification system features are based on measurable, credible and recognized criteria. These features are simple to apply with automatic calculation (ON/OFF) conditions. They are applicable to all business, products and countries (CA/SAP & Dangerous Substances system required). Lastly, they are in line with main regulatory frameworks and requirements (e.g. EU Eco-label).

The calculation of parameters are performed in CA using the automatic system developed based on products classification in families according to WhatsOn string. These families are only considered if they include > 10 articles. EcoLabel is applied to a product family if > 90% of the products satisfy the rating for the single product.

  1. Carbon Footprint: aimed at defining climate change impacts deriving from cables life cycle.
  2. Substances-of-High-Concern: Absence of CMR or Toxic/Hazardous to Environment substances in the cable.
  3. Recyclability / Circularity : Presence of potentially recyclable material, possibility to reclaim/recover.
  4. Recycling input rate (usage of recycled as raw materials): Presence of recycled materials in a cable, both purschased and reused.
  5. Environmental benefits: Low carbon products (including cables used for green energy sources), CPR compliant products (safe operations).
  6. Cable transmission efficiency: Cable transmission efficiency (performance) contributes to define product sustainability.
