Further development of Prysmian 400 kV cable system with AlMil conductor
Prysmian Netherlands has reached a new milestone in the field of high-voltage cables. Our 400 kV cable system with 4000 mm2 AlMil conductor is now qualified according to the strict requirements of IEC62067: 2022.
Testing the cable system, including the compatible trimmings such as the Click-Fit connection sleeve type CFJX-420 and outdoor end closure type OTC-420-X, has been successfully performed. The cable system has passed all challenges thanks to the effort of several departments: Operations ( cable design and production ), NetWorkComponents ( shrimp design and production ), Project and Service ( mounting the test setup ) and High Voltage laboratory ( type examination ).
The 4000 mm2 AlMil conductor is equivalent in load capacity to the 2500 mm2 CuMil enamelled conductor and an attractive alternative financially for customers.
Trusted benefits of aluminum
Prysmian Netherlands has traditionally developed aluminum ( massif, beaten or Milliken ) conductors. The advantages of these conductors are:
- lower cable weight,
- lower investment costs due to optimal price / meter ratio,
- lower installation costs, because it is more manageable due to lower weight,
- more compact cable design possible ( with solid conductor type ),
- no water penetration in the conductor ( with solid conductor type ).
Application of aluminum in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, aluminum in high-voltage cable conductors has been used for more than 40 years and we see an emphatic trend towards increasingly larger conductors. Other countries are also applying more and more large aluminum conductors instead of copper because of the many advantages that aluminum can offer.
Follow-up test
Prysmian Netherlands will perform a second type test of the 400 kV 4000 mm2 AlMil cable in its High Voltage laboratory in Milan. This test also includes the garnishes designed and manufactured by NetWorkComponents from Livorno. This type test is expected to be completed in April 2023.
