Waterschap De Dommel reduces project carbon footprint with Draka E-LINE cables

As part of the renovation and expansion of its sludge treatment facility in Mierlo, Waterschap De Dommel is taking additional steps to reduce the environmental impact of the project. By selecting Draka E-LINE cables for the low-voltage installation, the project is expected to save approximately 1,000 kg of CO₂ while supporting the organization's long-term sustainability ambitions.

Preparing critical infrastructure for the future

The sludge treatment facility (STF) in Mierlo plays a vital role in processing sludge from wastewater treatment plants across the region. With the Eindhoven area continuing to grow, the volume of sludge requiring treatment has increased significantly, creating the need for additional capacity and modernization.

To meet future demand, the facility is undergoing a major upgrade that includes the replacement of existing storage capacity, installation of larger sludge buffer tanks and modernization of key process systems. At the same time, aging equipment is being replaced to improve operational efficiency and reliability.

 

Modernization while maintaining operations

Hoppenbrouwers Techniek is responsible for the renewal and optimization of the electrical installation and process automation systems. One of the project's biggest challenges is carrying out these extensive upgrades while the facility remains operational.

Maintaining continuity of sludge processing is essential, requiring close collaboration between the water authority, contractors and project partners throughout the different phases of the project.

 

Sustainability beyond equipment efficiency

Sustainability is a central element of the renovation. In addition to implementing energy-efficient centrifuges and LED lighting, the project incorporates a materials passport to document the origin and use of materials, supporting future reuse and circularity initiatives.

The project team also looked beyond equipment performance to identify opportunities to reduce embodied carbon through material selection.

 

Choosing Draka E-LINE

For the low-voltage installation, approximately 15,000 meters of Draka E-LINE cabling will be installed. Designed with a lower carbon footprint than conventional alternatives, Draka E-LINE supports organizations looking to reduce the environmental impact of their electrical infrastructure without compromising quality or performance.

Although sustainable cabling was not originally included in the project specifications, the environmental benefits became clear during discussions with the project team. As a result, both contractor and end customer chose to incorporate Draka E-LINE into the project.

The use of Draka E-LINE is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,000 kg, demonstrating how material choices can contribute to broader sustainability goals throughout infrastructure projects.

By combining energy-efficient technologies, future-focused facility upgrades and lower-carbon materials, Waterschap De Dommel is creating a more sustainable sludge treatment facility that is prepared for the needs of tomorrow.
