Prysmian's first electric transportation of HV cable drums: a step towards zero-emission outbound logistics

Prysmian Netherlands is proud to announce another milestone in the journey towards sustainable logistics: the first within Prysmian electric transportation of high voltage (HV) cable drums. This project represents an important advance in our effort to achieve emission-free transportation by 2050, as defined in our Roadmap to 2050 Zero Emission Outbound Logistics.

Breaking new grounds in electric transport

In May, Prysmian began transporting HV cable drums from our manufacturing site in Delft to a project site in Oostzaan. TenneT and Liander are jointly constructing a new 150 kV switching station adjacent to the existing 380 kV substation in Oostzaan. The current cable work is being carried out by Qirion on behalf of TenneT. The project aims to expand the power grid in the Zaan region and Amsterdam-Noord.

The project involved transportation of cable drums that stand 3,7 meters high and 2,5 meters wide, with the heaviest drum weighing nearly 14 000 kilos. The use of electric vehicles for this task was a first within the whole Prysmian group for such heavy cargo.

Together to significant CO2 savings

By opting for electric transportation instead of conventional methods, Prysmian, in collaboration with Breytner, managed to save 2 700 kg of CO2 emissions for this project. This reduction highlights our ongoing efforts to minimize our environmental impact.

Breytner was key in addressing the challenges of transporting such heavy and large cargo. This collaboration underscores the importance of working together to achieve the sustainability goals.

“We are of course very proud of this project and see more and more opportunities for exceptional zero emission transport. After piloting with 50 tons we now see that consignments that are higher, wider, or longer than what is permitted, can in many cases be transported by zero emission trucks, that is great progress within the energy transition”, said Marie-José Baartmans of BREYTNER.

Roadmap to Zero Emissions

Prysmian has set clear targets to reach 100% emission-free transport by 2050. Our milestones include:

These targets reflect our commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable practices in our logistics operations.

Building on past successes and looking towards the future

This project builds on our previous efforts in outbound transportation, which primarily involved low voltage (LV) and medium voltage (MV) cable drums. Successfully transporting HV cable drums using electric vehicles demonstrates our ability to tackle more complex logistical challenges and sets the stage for future advancements.

We see this project as a significant step towards our long-term sustainability goals. As we continue to collaborate with partners who share our vision, we are confident in our ability to meet our emission-free transport targets and contribute to a greener future.
