Sustainable Logistics

A Healthy Supply Chain

With a dedication to enhancing our sustainability efforts, we are continuously seeking methods to decrease our ecological impact and discover innovative ways to promote environmental friendliness. One approach involves examining emissions in our supply chain, particularly within our logistics operations. Below, you can discover the diverse initiatives we have in place to manage our outbound logistics sustainably, upholding our commitment to a healthy and eco-friendly supply chain.

Zero emission transport pilot

In 2022, we implemented a zero-emission transport pilot as part of our corporate strategy at Prysmian Netherlands. Traditionally, we transport around 65,000 tons of goods annually, resulting in approximately 900 tons of CO2 emissions each year. Our goal is to reduce this environmental impact to zero.

To achieve this, our supply chain manager Dennis Schuten reached out to Breytner, a logistics service provider with a fully electric fleet, unlike others in the industry. During the trial, about 20 tons of cable were delivered to our network provider, Stedin, in Rotterdam using around 8 full drums. An electric forklift was also employed for this sustainable initiative.

The pilot demonstrated that electric heavy transport offers more possibilities than initially anticipated. Furthermore, the logistics processes remained the same operationally, allowing us to extend this service to more customers in the utility sector. We also plan to introduce it to other market segments.

First in Prysmian electric transportation of HV cable drums

In May, Prysmian began transporting HV cable drums from our manufacturing site in Delft to a project site in Oostzaan. TenneT and Liander are jointly constructing a new 150 kV switching station adjacent to the existing 380 kV substation in Oostzaan. The current cable work is being carried out by Qirion on behalf of TenneT. The project aims to expand the power grid in the Zaan region and Amsterdam-Noord.

In collaboration with Breytner, Prysmian Netherlands achieved another milestone in the journey towards sustainable logistics: the first within Prysmian electric transportation of high voltage (HV) cable drums

Schiphol & BAM

In collaboration with our partner Breytner, we undertook another initiative at Schiphol Airport with BAM, our other partner. We delivered 10 MV drums from Delft to Schiphol using 100% electric transportation.

The project involved transporting over 10 km of cable to the site on two occasions. Subsequently, in January and February, an additional 40 km of cable was transported to the site, also using electric means. This initiative resulted in a reduction of 1 ton of CO2 emissions.

Apart from using electric vehicles for this project, we also utilized our sustainable P Laser cable (36mm2), which is fully recyclable and reduces CO2 emissions by 10% during production. Following this project, it became evident how we could minimize CO2 emissions, leading Prysmian and BAM to the realization that continuously seeking ways to enhance sustainability throughout the project and the cable's lifespan is crucial.

Saving 115,000 kg of CO2 emissions in 2024 with EV truck transport

In 2024, Prysmian and Draka successfully transported an average of 4,000 tons of cables per month using electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative resulted in a reduction of 115,000 kg of CO2 emissions over the year.

Building on this success, Prysmian and Draka have set a new target for 2025: to transport an average of 6,000 tons of cables per month using EVs. This ambitious goal will require both EV trucks to be operational daily, aiming to save an additional 150,000 kg of CO2 emissions in 2025.

Prysmian Zero Emission Roadmap for 2050

Recently, we established a net-zero carbon goal for 2050 and raised our short-term emission reduction targets. Our commitment extends to reducing all CO2 emissions across the supply chain by 2050.
As part of our plan, approved by the Science based Target initiative (SBTi), we aim to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2035 compared to 2019 levels.

Moreover, we plan to achieve a 90% reduction in end-user emissions (Scope 3) by 2050, with the remaining 10% being offset through carbon credits.

Here is an overview of our roadmap to zero emissions:

  • By 2035: achieving net zero carbon emissions for Scope 1 and 2
  • By 2050: achieving net zero CO2 emissions for Scope 3
  • Interim target for 2030: reduce CO2 emissions by 46% for Scope 1 and 2, and by 21% for Scope 3
